Deploy Windows Server 2012 RD into a workgroup

Steps to join Workgroup:

  • On the dashboard click “Local Server” – on right hand side.
  • Click on “Computer name” to open the System Properties.
  • Click on “Change” and then “More”.
  • Add a DNS suffix  (i.e. “”)
  • Click OK and restart machine.

NOTE: You can change the Workgroup, Computer name and Description with the above steps.
NOTE: This will give you a FQDN of <computername>

Deployment of TS/RD:

  • On the dashboard click “(2) Add roles and features”, then “Next”.
  • Choose the first option “Role-based or feature-based installation” and “Next”.
  • Select your Server and “Next”.
  • Scroll down on the “Select Server Roles” screen and expand “Remote Desktop Services”.
  • Choose “Remote Desktop Licensing” and Remote Desktop Session Host”.
  • Hit “Next” until you can hit “Install”.

That is it.

ps: How to enable TS:

Run gpedit.msc

Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Licensing

“Use the specified RD license servers” = %myservername%

“Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode” = set your desired option
