My freind’s machine lost it’s Boot Drive.  The problem is that he has 7 HDD devices on the machine and to get the boot device (small 160G HDD) to be on /dev/sda is an absolute nightmare!

Ok, so how did I get to install GRUB to /dev/sdd?  Easy, follow the steps when you get the SDA failure on Installation:

  • Ctrl + Alt + F2
  • rm /dev/sda
  • ln /dev/sdd /dev/sda
  • Ctrl + Alt + F1
  • … retry installation of grub bootloader.

ps: This is IF the drive is displayed as SDD.  It could be any of the SDn devices…
