Following a weekend of headache, I am now going to change some major settings on my Pi:

turbo settings to alter are:

arm_freq=1000
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6

do not change force turbo setting this will void the warranty the method show uses the dynamic overclocking that is safe and keeps your warranty.

I am going to try and change:

boot=/dev/mmcblk0p1 disk=/dev/mmcblk0p2 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 ssh

to

boot=/dev/mmcblk0p1 disk=/dev/sdb1 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 ssh

(That is to say if the USB drive shows up as sda1..)

I will report back…
