Zimbra Backups.

I have been struggling with Zimbra Backups running out of space.  Basically it takes about 3 weeks for a 3TB disk to run completely out of space.

What I did to rectify this was to change the CRONTAB on the server (as Zimbra) to only run full backup’s once a month and to delete old backups:

# # Backups
# #
# # BACKUP BEGIN
# 0 1 * * 6 /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -f -a all –mail-report
# 0 1 * * 0-5 /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -i –mail-report
# 0 0 * * * /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -del 1m –mail-report
# # BACKUP END
#
# Backups by Aubrey. (Full Monthly, on the 1st/Intremental Daily excluding 1st)
# BACKUP BEGIN
0 1 1 * * /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -f -a all –mail-report
0 1 2-31 * * /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -i –mail-report
0 0 * * * /opt/zimbra/bin/zmbackup -del 1m –mail-report
# BACKUP END

You will see I have HASHED out the old backups and changed it to:

  • line 1: Run FULL backups on every 1st day of the month.
  • line 2: Run INCREMENTAL backups every 2nd to 31st day of the month.
  • line 3: Delete old backups every day that is older than a month.

This allows me to recover a full month on the backup structure.

My next task will be to manage this structure onto off-site facilities.
