To check your raid5 initialization stats (for example on a system like OpenMediaVault) all you have to do is:

cat /proc/mdstat

this will return stats like:

root@openmediavault:~# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md0 : active raid5 sdc[3] sdd[2] sde[1] sdb[0]
5860538880 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU]
[>………………..] resync = 1.2% (23534208/1953512960) finish=46169.8min speed=696K/sec

unused devices: <none>
root@openmediavault:~#
